Commonplace Book — Anti-Discriminatory Education

→ Entries

Abstract

This Commonplace Book is a reflective journey across the foundational themes in the Anti-Discriminatory Education course (CTL7009). Through eight entries, each grounded in class discussions, readings, and personal self-reflection, this collection explores the intersections of identity, privilege, and pedagogy in the pursuit of creating inclusive and equitable learning environments. The entries document my evolving perspective as an educator, examining biases, systemic inequities, and culturally responsive strategies. One highlight is poster created in response to the prompt, “building a classroom of belonging,” represented visually as a classroom space in the shape of a heart, symbolizing openness, empathy, and inclusion for all students. Key concepts such as anti-racism, performative equity, cultural responsiveness, and allyship are examined, with attention to the tensions between advocating for justice and navigating institutional constraints. The final entry, “Moving Beyond ‘Common Sense,’” synthesizes these reflections, exploring the shift from understanding social justice concepts to enacting them in the classroom. This commonplace book captures my commitment to continuous learning and an aspiration to foster classrooms where all students feel seen, valued, and empowered.
